Shutter Edit Button Greyed Out Fix for Ubuntu 18.04 / Mint 19

I recently made the switch from Windows to Linux on my Daily Driver, which also meant that I had to find an alternative for Greenshot on Windows to write my articles. Shutter was the closest thing to that, but unfortunately, the essential Edit button was grayed out. This Edit button is necessary to add Arrows or Blurr certain things in Screenshots. I had to find a solution, and I did. Follow this Article for a Shutter Edit Button Greyed Out Fix that works on Ubuntu and Linux Mint, or all Debian based Systems.

This is how it looks like if the Edit Button is Greyed out.

In previous Ubuntu and Mint Versions, you were able to fix this by simply running:

sudo apt-get install libgoo-canvas-perl

But this package was removed from Ubuntu 18.04 / Mint 19. Gladly, there is a fix for that.

We “simply” have to install the libgoo-canvas-perl package from Ubuntu 17.10. This also works for Linux Mint 19.

We differentiate between 32bit and 64bit, so choose carefully according to your System Architecture. If you are unsure which Architecture you run, you can find it out by running:

uname -a

As you can see below, I run a 64bit System, indicated by x86_64. If you run a 32bit System it should read x86_32.

For 32bit Systems:

mkdir ~/libgoo-canvas-perl
cd ~/libgoo-canvas-perl
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/libg/libgoo-canvas-perl/libgoo-canvas-perl_0.06-2ubuntu3_i386.deb wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/libe/libextutils-depends-perl/libextutils-depends-perl_0.405-1_all.deb
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/libe/libextutils-pkgconfig-perl/libextutils-pkgconfig-perl_1.15-1_all.deb
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/goocanvas/libgoocanvas3_1.0.0-1_i386.deb
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/goocanvas/libgoocanvas-common_1.0.0-1_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
sudo apt install -f

For 64bit Systems:

mkdir ~/libgoo-canvas-perl
cd ~/libgoo-canvas-perl
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/libg/libgoo-canvas-perl/libgoo-canvas-perl_0.06-2ubuntu3_amd64.deb
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/libe/libextutils-depends-perl/libextutils-depends-perl_0.405-1_all.deb
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/libe/libextutils-pkgconfig-perl/libextutils-pkgconfig-perl_1.15-1_all.deb
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/goocanvas/libgoocanvas3_1.0.0-1_amd64.deb
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/goocanvas/libgoocanvas-common_1.0.0-1_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
sudo apt install -f

Once this is done, you have to restart Shutter and your Edit Button should work perfectly now. I actually had to restart my System for it to work, so if a Shutter restart is not enough, do a quick reboot.

Wrapping Up

After all is done, you can go ahead and remove the libgoo-canvas-perl folder from your home directory. I really started to like working with Shutter. It is not as good as Greenshot, but it’s close. Eventually, it will get there one day, but it is perfectly enough for the work I do.
