Hey guys, welcome back to a new video. Just yesterday Kali Linux 2020.1 was
0:06
released and I already have uploaded a video going in-depth into all the new
0:12
major changes that has been made to the new release. You can check that out, I'll
0:16
link the video in the upper right corner. In this video as usual and as it's
0:21
tradition on this channel already we are just going over how to install Kali Linux
0:26
on VirtualBox the quickest and easiest way. Nevertheless, there has been a couple of changes made that will influence our installation routine
0:35
A couple of things changed, like the default root user is not existing anymore, there is
0:40
no default lower privilege user, and we will go over that as well and how to set up everything correctly
0:46
So without further ado, let's get right into it. In case you don't have VirtualBox installed yet, go to virtualbox.org, go to downloads
0:56
and then download VirtualBox either for Windows or Linux depending on which system you are
1:02
I have a Windows host, so download it, install it and also go ahead and download the VirtualBox
1:09
VM VirtualBox extension pack. This is necessary so you can use all the features like shared clipboard and stuff like that
1:15
Just click here to download it and once you have installed virtual box leaving everything on default you're going to install those
1:24
Virtual box as extension pack also and then you can already go ahead and download Kali
1:29
so go to Kali.org go to downloads And then you see quite a few changes here
1:35
But I will do a separate video where we will go over all of the changes that has been made to the actual
1:40
actual installer which is quite a lot of changes so that's why I want to make a separate video which
1:46
will be linked in this video in the upper right corner as well when it will be released maybe I'll
1:51
get that out today as well let's see but what you want is you want to scroll down to Kali Linux
1:58
until you find this here and you need to go to the offensive security VM download page and once
2:05
you are here you need to scroll down and don make the mistake and download the VM wire image that pops up here you need to extend the Kali Kali Linux VirtualBox images first and go ahead and download the Kali Linux VirtualBox 64 bit file here
2:19
I already have done that. And once you have everything ready, we can continue with the next step
2:24
By the way, if you prefer to have this instruction in written form, there is an article on seosec.com, so you can follow through that as well
2:30
if you prefer to have it in written step-by-step instructions. Okay, let's continue
2:35
Open up VirtualBox once you have installed it. As you can see, I already have a couple of other machines here, but you can just ignore
2:43
that for now. You want to click on File, then you want to click on Import Appliance
2:48
You leave that on default. You click here on the small folder. Then you're gonna navigate to your Downloads folder
2:54
And then you're gonna choose the Kali Linux 2020.1 VBox AMD64.ova file
3:01
It's an open virtualization format. So you can just go ahead and import that right into VirtualBox
3:07
Click on next once you have selected this. And then if you want to, you can change the machine base folder
3:14
And this is the location where your virtual hard drive will be stored. Be aware that the installation will probably take up around, I guess
3:22
between 10 and 20 gigabytes or something. I'm actually not really sure
3:26
You can check that out. but the Kali Linux VM is set up to take up as a maximum of 80 gigabytes and
3:34
That's dynamically allocated that means it only takes up as much hard drive space as you actually use
3:40
But it can take up to 80 gigabytes So be aware of that
3:44
I'll leave it on default and just click on import and of course agree the software
3:50
agreement here the license agreement and then it should import the appliance which will take a couple of minutes
3:56
And it's depending on your computer. Alright, there we go. The import process is finished
4:02
Now you right click your VM and you go to settings. You can basically just fire it up as it is if you want
4:08
But I like to change the name to something more readable. So I just name it Kali 2020.1
4:15
Then we go to system. And here you can allocate as much memory as you can spare
4:19
It always a good idea to stay inside of the green recommended value here I have quite a lot of memory so I give it 8 gigabytes Then you want to go over to processor and the same is here Just stay in the
4:31
green and you will be fine. Actually 4 is fine and you can leave everything else on default
4:38
Then you want to go to display. I think this is fine. In case you have any graphical glitches
4:45
I experienced that on Kali 2019.4. Change this graphics controller from VMS VGA to Vbox VGA
4:53
but only in case you have graphic glitches while using Kali, just to be aware of that as well
4:59
Okay, you can double check network if you want, but it's fine to leave it on net. You can also choose to do a bridge network
5:05
which is simulating a physical connection to your network, but I usually leave it on net
5:09
And then basically we can hit OK, and we can right click the machine
5:13
We can go to start and select normal start and now if everything went well, Kali should boot up for the first time
5:21
Alright, there we go. Now the default user changed as I said, it's not a root and tor anymore
5:27
It's actually Kali and password also Kali This is the new default low privilege user and that comes with Kali Linux and you just can go ahead and
5:38
Extend your screen here and you can see that virtual box guest editions are already pre-installed
5:44
So you can have full screen and it's automatically adjusting Your screen size, which is great two more things we want to do before wrapping up this video
5:53
Go ahead open a terminal and as always the first thing you want to do a pseudo apt
5:59
update and and You don't have an end here because I have a German keyboard
6:04
So let's cover that as well if you want to change your keyboard layout click on start here on the file or on the menu button
6:10
Then just start typing key for keyboard open up the keyboard menu go to layout
6:16
Then untick use system defaults click on add and choose the whatever keyboard you want
6:23
I'll choose the german one because I have no idea where the ampersand is on the english keyboard
6:28
So I just quickly gonna fix that click on close and now I should be able to put two ampersands here So sudo apt update and end sudo apt upgrade tech why will upgrade your system update apt and will upgrade your system I won do that now because
6:45
it takes too much time for this demonstration so after you have done
6:49
that we will continue to the next step so obviously the first thing you want to
6:54
do is change the default password that's simply done by typing passwd and then
7:01
type the current password which is Kali and then type your new desired
7:05
password whatever you want to set it to and there is one more thing what we also
7:10
need to do is the default root password for the root account is also Kali and we
7:16
want to change that as well so what we do is we type sudo tag i to basically
7:21
lock in as root then you put your new password that you have just set and then
7:27
see your route at Kali and then you want to do again passwd and set this password
7:32
also to your new password or to some different password if you want you can
7:37
choose the same that's fine then you can tap exit and you are back on your Kali
7:42
user and that's basically all you need to do to get started if you don't know
7:48
where to go from here I'll link a article in the upper right corner the
7:52
top 10 or the top things to do after installing Kali Linux there's a couple
7:57
of more things there like how to create a new user and install the most popular
8:01
tools and stuff like this I'll recommend you to check that out if you want to
8:06
continue and that concludes this video on how to install Kali Linux 2020.1 on
8:12
